Shirley Kirkcaldy

Shirley is a contemporary landscape artist living on Dartmoor which, together with her familiarity and love of the southwest coastlines, greatly informs her work. Colour, contrast, light and texture are elements that feature significantly and form the foundation for what she aims to capture on canvas - an ‘intuitive response to a place and time’. Working expressively in oil or mixed media, images that exist in actuality, are transposed as reflections of what she sees and feels when in the landscape. Paintings are developed from the prolific sketches and visual notes she makes on location which become etched in memory and, in the studio, these combine with materials to explore ideas created. By subtracting or abstracting information her work often leans towards anonymity, thus, she is inviting the viewer to form their own interpretation whilst always conveying a personal significance of an ever-changing landscape. Shirley exhibits her work regularly throughout the Southwest and has been a featured artist in ‘Devon Life’ and ‘Dartmoor’ magazines. Her work is represented by Wildwood Arts gallery, Horrabridge and Tidal gallery, Kingsbridge and has work in private collections in the UK, Europe and USA.

Please contact Shirley directly or visit her website if you would like more information on her work or about the various workshops she runs throughout the year:
